Upendo Daima - Project for Street Children Tanzania

Mayor, fish and new cooking facilities in the kitchen

February 2012

The mayor of Würzburg (Germany) and his team visited Malimbe Family early February to open the Education Centre that has been financed by them. The children were in a very good mood and gave a beautiful acrobatics and dance performance. We showed them around at the site and briefed them about our work methods and they were quite impressed. Mushidi, a former street child and now an artist, set up a nice exposition of his work and sold a lot that day. Now he can buy a compressor and paint to make larger paintings. It was a fantastic and successful day in all aspects.

On 10 February it was another festive day and we received a pick-up truck full of fish from one of the fish factories in Mwanza. Straight away I made a few pictures to show you.

From a family in Holland we received 900 euro and almost immediately spent the money on a new cooking facility in the Malimbe Family kitchen. Mama Tabu, our cook, is extremely happy because she no longer gets red teary eyes from the smoke!

Jan Willem and his girl friend Sietske visited us on their way to the Serengeti. Jan has set up a Computer Training Centre and Internet Café in 2004 as an income-generating project. This is presently operated by another organization.

They were impressed with the developments of our project. They brought a beamer for the children, who were exited because they could immediately watch the African football tournament with Zambia as the champion! From the parents of Jan Willem we received 150 euro to buy firewood for the new kitchen cooking facilities.

Our programme for the secondary schooling is getting larger. The total number of secondary school students is already 26, because this year all 7 boys of Standard 7 continued with secondary education. Some of them went to a so-called combined school; a secondary school combined with vocational training.

We see more and more that it is very difficult for many boys to study when they are at home. They also miss the attention and interest from the parents and often they do not get any guidance at all. If they want to obtain good results this is absolutely necessary. Often they parents have other worries and we therefore decided to send all seven boys to a boarding school this year.
